Canadian tax documents: a beginner’s guide

Start with the slips you have—not the tax vocabulary you do not.

T4 and T4A

A T4 reports employment income and payroll amounts from an employer. Box 14 generally shows employment income and Box 22 income tax deducted. A T4A reports certain pension, retirement, annuity, and other income; it can appear in contractor situations, but not every T4A amount is self-employment.

T5 and T2202

A T5 commonly reports investment income. A T2202 is a tuition and enrolment certificate from an eligible educational institution. Your situation may include other slips and receipts.

Before filing

Gather expected income slips, RRSP receipts, eligible donation receipts, tuition documents, and records supporting deductions or credits. Compare them with CRA My Account where available.
