Understanding your T4

Read employment income and tax withheld separately, combine multiple T4s correctly, and understand what the simplified estimator leaves out.

2025 T4 employment information; unusual codes, cross-border work and other income need additional treatment.

Box 14 generally reports employment income and Box 22 reports income tax deducted. They are different inputs: income helps determine liability, while tax deducted records a payment already made toward it.

Do not substitute take-home pay

Net pay after payroll deductions is not Box 14. CPP or QPP contributions, EI premiums and other deductions can also affect a paycheque. T4 boxes 16/17 and 18 concern pension contributions and EI; additional contribution boxes and reporting codes may apply.

Example: two jobs in the same year

Assume one T4 shows $42,000 in Box 14 and $6,000 in Box 22, and another shows $8,000 and $1,000. Use $50,000 total employment income and $7,000 total income tax deducted for a simple employment-only estimate. Adding CPP and EI to the $7,000 would incorrectly treat them as income-tax withholding.

Those totals alone do not establish a refund. The final return must account for all applicable income, deductions and credits.

Check before using the figures

Make sure the slip is for the claim year, belongs to you, and is not superseded by an amendment. If amounts appear wrong, ask the issuer about a correction. Do not replace a missing withholding figure with an estimate of what payroll probably deducted.

What this calculator cannot read from a T4

Beaver Ledger does not upload or parse your slip. You enter selected figures manually. Its limited model omits CPP/EI credits and deductions and many provincial adjustments, so the result can differ materially from filing software. “Using a T4” does not make it a complete return.

  • Gather all relevant slips.
  • Read income and withholding independently.
  • Review other income and calculator exclusions before relying on an estimate.
